Every year, Kota attracts an influx of over two lakh students who converge in pursuit of their dreams to crack competitive exams. The most prominently the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) for engineering and the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) for medical college admissions.

Regrettably, the city has become synonymous with its rigorous coaching institutes, which, while providing intensive academic preparation. They have also faced criticism for contributing to a stressful and sometimes fatal environment.

Authorities in Kota District revealed that a staggering 22 students preparing for competitive exams have tragically ended their lives in 2023 alone. This is marking an unprecedented spike compared to previous years. Last year, the toll stood at 15, highlighting a worrying trend that prompted swift action from local officials.

Disturbingly, the situation escalated further on Sunday, when two young lives were lost within a span of just four hours. One of the victims, identified as Avishkar Shambaji Kasle, a 17-year-old student, jumped off the sixth floor of his coaching institute’s building shortly after completing a mock NEET test. The tragic incident occurred at approximately 3:15 pm in the Jawahar Nagar area. Authorities were quick to underscore the urgency of addressing this issue and safeguarding the well-being of these young minds.

Alleviating Mental Pressure

The decision to halt routine tests for the next two months is intended to offer respite to students and alleviate the immense pressure they face.

These assessments are pivotal in gauging their progress and readiness for upcoming exams. The tragic toll on mental health has prompted authorities to prioritize the students’ well-being above all else.

Kota, often hailed as the “coaching capital” of India, has been grappling with the complexities of this issue for years. As the city endeavors to balance its status as an academic haven with the psychological well-being of its student populace. This bold step marks a potentially pivotal turning point.

Authorities and educators alike are now tasked with reimagining a learning environment that fosters healthy competition, holistic growth, and mental well-being.

Conclusion

The tragic loss of young lives serves as a sombre reminder of the urgency to address the challenges that the education system poses to students’ mental health.

As Kota grapples with these sobering realities. A collective effort is required to ensure that academic aspirations do not come at the cost of the students life.
