Rajnath Singh India’s defense minister is commissioning a new ship of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG). This ship is named as Samudra Pratap. It will be commissioned in Goa. It is the first of two specialized pollution control vessels being inducted into the coast guard. This marks a major step in strengthening India’s marine pollution response capability.
What is ICG Samudra Pratap?
It is a pollution control vessel (PCV). It is specifically designed to deal with the oil spill, marine pollution incidents, firefighting at sea, and maritime security support. The INS Samudra Pratap is a significant addition to the Indian Navy’s fleet, specifically designed for specialized offshore roles. It is the second of two Pollution Control Vessels (PCVs) built indigenously by Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL). It features specialized equipment such as heavy-duty booms, skimmers, and dispersant systems to contain and recover oil spills at sea. The vessel has dedicated tanks for storing recovered oil until it can be transferred to land. Beyond pollution control, it is capable of performing Search and Rescue (SAR) missions, firefighting, and surveillance. It features a helicopter deck capable of operating advanced light helicopters (ALH), enhancing its reach for reconnaissance and rescue.

Operational Area
Samudra Pratap can operate within India’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) (up to 200 nautical miles) and beyond EEZ, if required. EEZ contains marine resources, offshore oil and gas installations. It also aide in shipping lanes. Beside that it has role in pollution incidents like damage marine ecosystems, affect fisheries, impact coastal livelihoods. It enhances its role in Coastal surveillance, disaster response, support during maritime accidents.
