Amid the backdrop of the upcoming BRICS Summit, Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval held a significant meeting with top Chinese diplomat Wang Yi in South Africa. During the meeting, Doval conveyed India’s concerns regarding the deteriorating situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the western sector of the India-China boundary since 2020. The Ministry of External Affairs released a statement after the meeting, acknowledging that the prolonged military standoff has “eroded strategic trust” and impacted the public and political basis of the bilateral relationship.
The India-China tension has been a pressing issue for over three years, with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar describing it as one of the most complex challenges in his long diplomatic career. India has consistently emphasized that a return to normalcy in the bilateral relationship can only be achieved through peace and tranquility in the border areas.
During the meeting, both sides recognized the significance of the India-China relationship not only for the two nations but also for the broader region and the world. The two leaders expressed the importance of continued efforts to resolve the situation fully and restore peace and stability along the LAC.
Wang Yi, director of the Office of the foreign affairs commission of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, expressed his country’s willingness to enhance strategic mutual trust, focus on consensus and cooperation, and overcome obstacles to put bilateral relations back on track. He also reaffirmed China’s commitment to never seeking hegemony and expressed readiness to work with developing countries, including India, to support multilateralism and promote a more just and equitable development of the international order.
This meeting comes in the wake of External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s recent meeting with Wang Yi in Jakarta, Indonesia, where they discussed outstanding issues related to peace and tranquility in border areas.
As India gears up to host the BRICS Summit next month, Ajit Doval called for collective efforts to tackle challenges arising from cybersecurity during the Friends of BRICS meeting held in South Africa. The BRICS grouping, comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, represents a significant platform for these nations to collaborate and strengthen ties across various domains.
The meeting between Ajit Doval and Wang Yi signifies the ongoing diplomatic engagement between India and China to find solutions to their differences and build mutual trust. Both nations hold considerable influence in the global arena, and their cooperation is vital for regional stability and international order. As the world watches closely, the hope remains that constructive dialogues and efforts will pave the way for a peaceful resolution and foster a positive trajectory in India-China relations.
