In the latest edition of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) rankings for law schools in India, the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) in Bangalore has once again claimed the top spot for the sixth consecutive year. The NIRF rankings, released annually, provide valuable insights into the performance and quality of higher education institutions across various disciplines.
NLSIU’s consistent excellence in legal education has cemented its position as the premier law school in the country. Its distinguished faculty, state-of-the-art infrastructure, and commitment to delivering exceptional legal education have contributed to its top-ranking position. National Law University, Delhi (NLUD), also maintaining its position from the previous year, secures the second spot in the rankings. Known for its rigorous academic curriculum and esteemed faculty, NLUD continues to be a preferred choice for aspiring law students. Its emphasis on practical legal training and research opportunities has propelled its status as one of India’s leading law schools.
NALSAR, Hyderabad, holds the third position in this year’s rankings, further reinforcing its reputation as an institute of academic excellence. With a focus on multidisciplinary legal education, NALSAR offers a comprehensive curriculum that prepares students for diverse career paths within the legal field. The institute’s commitment to fostering critical thinking and nurturing legal acumen has been recognized consistently in the NIRF rankings.
The 2023 rankings showcase the performance of participating institutions, including the 25 National Law Universities (NLUs) across the country. Surprisingly, only 11 NLUs managed to secure a position within the top 30 law schools, highlighting the intense competition and the need for continuous improvement in legal education.
While Symbiosis Law School (SLS), Pune, secured the third position in the 2022 rankings, it dropped to sixth place this year. West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (WBNUJS), Kolkata, and Jamia Millia Islamia claimed the fourth and fifth positions, respectively. Gujarat National Law University (GNLU), Gandhinagar, achieved the seventh rank, followed closely by Siksha O Anusandhan at number eight. IIT Kharagpur secured the ninth position, while Babsaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University in Lucknow made its debut on the list, ranking tenth.
The NIRF rankings evaluate law schools based on several parameters, including Teaching, Learning & Resources (TLR), Research and Professional Practice (RPC), Graduation Outcomes (GO), Outreach and Inclusivity (OI), and Perception. These factors collectively reflect the quality of education, research output, employment opportunities, and social inclusivity within the institutions.
In addition to the top-ranking NLUs, several others featured in the top 30 law schools. National Law Institute University (NLIU) Bhopal secured the 18th position, followed by Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law (RGNUL), Patiala, at 20th place. Dr. Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University (RMLNLU), Lucknow, secured the 21st rank, while National University of Study & Research in Law (NUSRL), Ranchi, claimed the 24th spot. National Law University and Judicial Academy (NLUJA) Kamrup, and National Law University, Cuttack, also made it to the top 30, ranking 28th and 30th, respectively.
