UEFA Match with a referee who seemed spanish

Jose Mourinho claims referee’s decisions favoured Sevilla in a contentious match

As Roma manager Jose Mourinho expressed his dissatisfaction with English referee Anthony Taylor following his team’s defeat to Sevilla in the 2022/23 UEFA Europa League final. In a post-match interview with Sky Sports, Mourinho stated that the final was an intense and vibrant affair, but he believed the referee’s decisions heavily favored the Spanish side.

The match, which ended in a 4-1 penalty shootout victory for Sevilla, saw Taylor issuing a record-breaking 14 yellow cards, the highest ever recorded in a Europa League game. Mourinho voiced his concerns over the refereeing performance, suggesting that Taylor’s decisions were reminiscent of a Spanish referee.

“This is a European final, and with this kind of refereeing, it is hard to accept. It seemed like there was a Spanish referee on the pitch. It was yellow, yellow, yellow all the time,” Mourinho expressed during the press conference following the game.

The Portuguese coach went on to highlight what he believed were inconsistent decisions made by Taylor, suggesting that Roma players were booked for actions that went unpunished for Sevilla players. Mourinho mentioned an incident involving Roma’s Lorenzo Pellegrini, who received a yellow card for a similar action for which Sevilla’s Lucas Ocampos went unpunished.

“Pellegrini falls in the box and is given a yellow card, Ocampos does exactly the same thing, and he doesn’t get one. It’s a scandal. VAR called the referee and shamed Ocampos, but there’s no card given,” Mourinho argued.

Mourinho’s frustrations with the referee spilled over after the match, as he was spotted shouting at Anthony Taylor in the car park, referring to him as “a disgrace.” The outburst further emphasized the manager’s dissatisfaction with the officiating throughout the game.

AS Roma’s defeat means they will participate in the UEFA Europa League once again next season, having finished sixth in Serie A. However, had they emerged victorious in the final, they would have secured direct entry into the UEFA Champions League for the upcoming campaign.

The criticism directed at the referee by Mourinho has sparked debates among fans and pundits alike, with many questioning the consistency and fairness of the officiating during the match. UEFA is expected to review the refereeing decisions to ensure the integrity of the competition.

As both teams reflect on the final, Sevilla celebrates their record-extending seventh UEFA Europa League title, while AS Roma must regroup and focus on their next campaign with renewed determination to achieve their Champions League aspirations.
