Maryam Nawaz, Senior Vice President of the PML-N party, took a dig at Imran Khan, declaring that his political game is over and accusing him of being the mastermind behind the May 9 violence in Pakistan. Speaking at a convention in Punjab province, she referred to the recent exodus of senior members from Khan’s PTI party and criticized him for the turmoil within his party. Maryam Nawaz alleged that Imran Khan orchestrated the “terrorism” on May 9, although his workers are now facing legal consequences.
Following the violence, numerous prominent figures, including PTI Secretary General Asad Umar, former information minister Fawad Chaudhry, and former minister for human rights Shireen Mazari, have parted ways with the PTI. Maryam Nawaz mocked the PTI’s mass departure, highlighting the queues of members leaving the party. The exodus began after security forces cracked down on the PTI following attacks on civil and military institutions.
Maryam Nawaz further criticized Imran Khan, questioning the leader’s credibility by stating, “How will the people stand when the leader himself is a jackal?” She also made remarks about Khan’s court appearances with his wife, accusing him of using other women as a shield. The violence on May 9 erupted after paramilitary Rangers arrested Imran Khan from the Islamabad High Court premises, leading to protests and vandalism by PTI supporters at military installations and the storming of the Army headquarters in Rawalpindi.
The clashes resulted in several deaths and the arrest of numerous PTI supporters. The incident was described by the powerful Army as a “dark day” in the country’s history. Maryam Nawaz’s comments reflect the ongoing political tensions in Pakistan and the deepening divide between political parties.
