In a significant development, Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu has formally requested the withdrawal of Indian military personnel from the country by March 15. This request comes nearly two months after Male initially sought the removal of Indian troops stationed in the Maldives. According to the latest government figures, there are currently 88 Indian military personnel in the Maldives.

Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim, the public policy secretary at the President’s Office, emphasized in a press briefing that the policy of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and the administration dictates that Indian military personnel cannot remain in the Maldives. The deadline of March 15 adds a sense of urgency to the situation, highlighting the Maldivian government’s firm stance on the issue.

The two nations, Maldives and India, have established a high-level core group tasked with negotiating the withdrawal of Indian troops. The inaugural meeting of this group took place at the Foreign Ministry Headquarters in Male’, with the participation of Indian High Commissioner Munu Mahawar.

About Indian Troop Withdrawal:

Nazim confirmed the meeting, stating that the primary agenda was centered around the formal request for the withdrawal of troops by the specified deadline. The negotiation process signifies the diplomatic efforts put forth by both countries to address the concerns and find a resolution to the matter.

The presence of Indian military personnel in the Maldives has been a subject of diplomatic discussions, and the establishment of the core group underscores the commitment to navigating through this sensitive issue collaboratively. The deadline set by President Muizzu adds a sense of time sensitivity to the negotiations, urging both parties to engage in dialogue and reach a resolution within the stipulated timeframe.

The developments in the coming weeks leading up to March 15 will be closely watched, as the diplomatic interactions between Maldives and India unfold. The outcome of the negotiations will not only shape the future of military relations between the two nations but also impact the broader regional dynamics. As the deadline approaches, the international community will keenly observe the diplomatic maneuverings, hoping for a peaceful resolution that respects the sovereignty and interests of both Maldives and India.
