Introduction
In a resounding display of unity and progress, the Bakshi Stadium in Jammu and Kashmir’s capital, Srinagar, witnessed an overwhelming surge of citizens who flocked to celebrate Independence Day. The event marked a significant departure from the past as long queues of people eagerly waited outside the stadium, eagerly participating in the festivities.
Among the notable sights captured by videos were individuals proudly waving the Tricolour at the iconic Lal Chowk in Srinagar. This year’s celebrations were notable for the absence of restrictions that citizens had faced on previous Independence Days. Officials confirmed that there were no internet curbs in place, a departure from the norm in the region.
Bakshi Stadium played host to the Independence Day function after a five-year hiatus due to renovations that concluded in 2023. Government employees were a prominent presence at the event, as it was made mandatory for them to attend. The event was graced by the presence of Manoj Sinha, the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, who addressed the gathering.
Since the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, the Lieutenant Governor appointed by the Centre has taken the role of the chief guest at these celebrations. Speaking to NDTV, Manoj Sinha emphasized the positive changes that have taken place over the past four years since the special status of the region was revoked.
Sinha’s Conversation
“It was a clear message sent to the people of Jammu and Kashmir that raising questions on the unity and integrity of India won’t be tolerated,” said Sinha during a conversation with NDTV’s Editor-in-Chief Sanjay Pugalia.
In a similar spirit of unity and progress, Jammu also celebrated Independence Day with fervor. Lieutenant Governor’s advisor, Rajeev Rai Bhatnagar, unfurled the national flag, highlighting the significant strides the region has made in the past four years.
“Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed the rise of a new era in the last four years which promises harmony, development, and affluence,” said Mr. Bhatnagar.
The run-up to the Independence Day celebrations saw Tiranga rallies taking place in various parts of the state. Government offices and other buildings illuminated with the Tricolour theme added to the patriotic fervour.
Conclusion
Apart from Srinagar and Jammu, heightened security was observed across different parts of Jammu and Kashmir, particularly along the highways. The peaceful and spirited celebrations reflected the region’s transition towards a promising future characterized by unity and progress.
