‘Amrit Bharat Stations Scheme’ to Implement Uniform Signage System

Indian Railways has announced its plans to standardise signage at railway stations across the country under the ‘Amrit Bharat Stations Scheme.’ The initiative aims to enhance the convenience of passengers by implementing uniform signages based on colour, font, and the use of pictograms. The project details were unveiled by Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Monday, marking a significant step towards streamlining the passenger experience.

With the ongoing redevelopment of 1,275 stations across India, the Indian Railways recognizes the need for standardised signages to provide consistent information to passengers and simplify navigation within railway premises. The new signage system will ensure that travellers can quickly and easily identify essential facilities, platforms, ticket counters, waiting areas, exits, and other vital locations within the stations.

Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasised the importance of uniformity in the signages, stating, “By standardising the colour, font, and pictograms used in railway station signages, we aim to create a seamless experience for passengers. This will greatly assist them in locating various amenities and services, reducing confusion and enhancing their overall journey.”

The uniform signage system will utilise a consistent colour scheme throughout all stations, allowing passengers to associate specific colours with different amenities. For instance, ticket counters might be identified by a particular colour, while platforms could have a distinct colour scheme. This standardised approach will make it easier for passengers, especially those unfamiliar with the station layout, to navigate efficiently.

The use of standardised fonts will contribute to legibility, ensuring that signs can be read easily from a distance. Additionally, the inclusion of pictograms alongside text will cater to passengers who may face language barriers or have limited literacy. These visual representations will convey essential information effectively and enable a wider range of passengers to navigate the stations with ease.

To facilitate the implementation of the standardised signages, the Indian Railways has released a comprehensive booklet containing detailed guidelines and specifications for the project. The booklet will serve as a reference for railway authorities, contractors, and other stakeholders involved in the redevelopment and maintenance of railway stations.

The ‘Amrit Bharat Stations Scheme’ is a crucial endeavour undertaken by the Indian Railways to transform railway stations into world-class transportation hubs that prioritise passenger convenience and comfort. The uniform signage system represents a significant milestone in this journey, ensuring that passengers across the country can enjoy a seamless experience while travelling by train.

The implementation of standardised signages at railway stations is expected to have a positive impact on millions of passengers, promoting a hassle-free and user-friendly environment. The Indian Railways’ commitment to continuously improving the travel experience is evident, and this initiative will undoubtedly contribute to making train journeys more accessible and enjoyable for all.
