Introduction 

In a remarkable display of maritime rescue expertise. The Indian Coast Guard executed a flawless mid-sea medical evacuation of a Chinese national from a research vessel in the Arabian Sea. The mission carried out under challenging weather conditions, showcased the Coast Guard’s commitment to safeguarding lives at sea.

The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Mumbai received an urgent distress call on the night of August 16. By informing them that Yin Weigyang, a crew member aboard the Panama-flagged research vessel MV Dong Fang Kan Tan No 2. It had suffered a cardiac attack and required immediate medical intervention. The vessel was approximately 200 kilometers off the coast of Mumbai, en route from China to the United Arab Emirates.

Swiftly springing into action. The Indian Coast Guard initiated communication with the distressed vessel and provided essential telemedicine advice to stabilize Yin Weigyang’s condition.

With the weather conditions proving to be formidable. The Coast Guard team decided to conduct the evacuation under the cover of night.

Rescue Helicopters were dispatched

Under the darkness of night and amid turbulent seas, an Advanced Light Helicopter MK-III was dispatched to the research vessel. The helicopter reached the vessel and Yin Weigyang was airlifted with precision and care. First aid was administered onboard the helicopter, ensuring his stable condition during the transfer.

The efforts of the Indian Coast Guard resulted in a seamless operation, allowing for the successful evacuation of Yin Weigyang from the research vessel. Upon reaching Mumbai, the patient was handed over to a medical team for further treatment and care.

The Ministry of Defence lauded the Indian Coast Guard for their swiftness and professionalism in executing the challenging medical evacuation. In a statement, the ministry highlighted how the operation exemplified the Coast Guard’s dedication to its motto, “We Protect.” By saving the life of a foreign national stranded at sea, the Indian Coast Guard once again demonstrated its unwavering commitment to maritime safety and rescue operations.

The successful rescue mission not only underlined the capabilities of the Indian Coast Guard. But also showcased the importance of international collaboration in maritime emergency situations. The operation serves as a testament to the dedication of maritime authorities to ensure the safety and well-being of seafarers, regardless of their nationality, even in the face of adverse conditions.
