India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, recently addressed the intricate challenge posed by China and the measures taken by the Narendra Modi government to ensure the preservation of the status quo in the border areas. Speaking at Anant National University, Jaishankar emphasized the need for a delicate balance in the relationship between India and China, while rejecting any terms dictated by either party.

Over the past three years, the border areas have been witness to heightened tensions, with China’s incursions in eastern Ladakh being a notable example. In response, the Indian government has undertaken necessary actions to prevent any unilateral attempts to change the status quo in these regions. The minister stressed the importance of mutual respect, sensitivity, and recognition of each other’s interests as the basis for fostering a better relationship between the two nations.

Jaishankar further highlighted the Modi government’s focus on strengthening ties with neighboring countries. Notably, India has undertaken initiatives to enhance connectivity with countries like Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan through the development of roads, railways, waterways, and electricity grid connections. These efforts have transformed India’s perception in the region, as demonstrated by its substantial support to Sri Lanka during a severe economic crisis, surpassing the assistance provided by international organizations like the IMF.

Beyond its immediate neighborhood, India is actively engaging with countries in the Indo-Pacific region. The minister mentioned the ongoing discussions within the Quad framework, encompassing areas such as maritime collaboration, infrastructure connectivity, 5G technology, and vaccine cooperation. Additionally, India is fostering partnerships with countries in the west, including Israel, the United States, and the United Arab Emirates. The government’s approach under Prime Minister Modi is focused on building a long-term global footprint that extends beyond immediate and short-term objectives.

Jaishankar underscored the significance of India’s rise in the world, comparing it to China’s ascent. This highlights the country’s increasing influence and prominence on the global stage. By addressing the challenges posed by China and simultaneously expanding its regional and global engagements, India is positioning itself as a rising power with a unique role to play in global affairs.

In summary, Minister Jaishankar’s remarks shed light on India’s complex relationship with China and the efforts made by the Modi government to maintain peace and stability in the border areas. They also highlight India’s strengthened ties with neighboring countries, its engagement in the Indo-Pacific region, and its pursuit of global partnerships. India’s rise as a significant global player, alongside China, underscores its growing influence and aspirations for a mutually respectful and balanced international order.
