Introduction

In a dramatic turn of events, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan’s counsel, Naeem Haider Panjotha, revealed shocking news on Monday. He revealed that his client was willing to spend the rest of his life in prison. Khan was arrested on August 5 following a district and sessions court conviction on charges of corrupt practices related to the state gift depository. Therefore he is currently serving his sentence at Attock Jail. The conviction was handed down despite Khan’s denial of the allegations.

Poor living condition in jails

Panjotha, speaking to media outlets after a meeting with Khan,. He shed light on the subpar conditions in which the PTI chairman was being held. He highlighted the deplorable state of the cell, describing it as infested with flies and bugs. Khan’s lawyer also asserted that despite being provided C-class facilities, his client was kept in what he deemed a “poor condition.”

Furthermore, Panjotha disclosed that Imran Khan had informed him about the lack of proper legal procedures during his arrest. He alleged that the police did not present a warrant at the time of arrest and attempted to forcefully enter the room of Khan’s wife, Bushra Bibi.

Amid these revelations, the former Prime Minister’s counsel has announced an appeal against the trial court’s verdict would be filed on Tuesday. Khan himself has reportedly signed the power of attorney for the appeal.

Adding to the mounting legal battle, the PTI lodged a petition with the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday. The petition sought to transfer Imran Khan from Attock Jail to Adiala Jail. By citing his educational background, habits, social and political status, and his former life of affluence. The PTI argued that Khan’s background entitled him to better or A-class facilities within the prison system.

The petition noted Khan’s prestigious educational history, including being a graduate of Oxford University. It mentioned his former role as the captain of the Pakistan national cricket team.

According to Rule 243 and Rule 248 of the Pakistan Prison Rules, the petition asserted that Khan’s social and political stature warranted better living conditions while incarcerated.

Conclusion

It remains to be seen how the legal proceedings will unfold in the coming days. Imran Khan and his legal team navigate the intricacies of the legal system and attempt to overturn the conviction.

The PTI chairman’s willingness to endure a life behind bars, along with the revelations of substandard conditions in Attock Jail, has brought fresh attention to the ongoing legal saga surrounding one of Pakistan’s most prominent political figures.
