Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has taken a significant step towards environmental preservation by announcing plans to frame a policy to find alternatives to plastic within a year. This move aims to tackle the growing problem of plastic pollution in the state. Furthermore, the government will encourage industries to seek substitutes for plastic, promoting the use of more sustainable materials.

During a state-level function held on World Environment Day, Sukhu emphasized the importance of gradually enforcing a complete ban on plastic use. This commitment reflects the government’s determination to address the pressing environmental issues caused by plastic waste. Sukhu also highlighted the potential of utilizing plastic waste in road construction, emphasizing the importance of innovation and sustainable solutions.

To promote environmental awareness from a young age, the chief minister called for the inclusion of culture and environment-oriented courses in the educational curriculum. By integrating these subjects into the education system, the government aims to instill a sense of responsibility and consciousness regarding the environment among children.

Sukhu’s dedication to creating a greener future for Himachal Pradesh is evident in the state’s first green budget, which focuses on addressing environmental concerns. The budget allocates funds for renewable energy initiatives and places a strong emphasis on combatting single-use plastic. As part of their commitment to sustainability, the government plans to gradually replace its existing fleet of vehicles with electric ones over the next three years.

Himachal Pradesh is taking a leadership role in establishing green corridors, becoming the first state in the country to do so. This infrastructure development is crucial in promoting eco-friendly transportation and reducing carbon emissions. Additionally, the state government is focusing on the production of green hydrogen, a clean energy source that can contribute to a sustainable future.

The ultimate goal of the government is to transform Himachal Pradesh into a ‘Green Energy State’ by March 2026. This ambitious target demonstrates the state’s commitment to renewable energy and sustainable development.

During the World Environment Day event, Sukhu was presented with a jacket made from recycled plastic waste, symbolizing the importance of promoting environmental awareness. The chief minister also inaugurated an exhibition featuring various self-help groups and organizations actively involved in environmental preservation.

Dia Mirza, United Nations Goodwill Ambassador, joined the event and highlighted the adverse effects of plastic waste, drawing attention to its presence in the human bloodstream through the consumption of various food items. She stressed the need for collaboration between the government and industries to tackle this pressing environmental issue.

Himachal Pradesh has already implemented several measures for environmental preservation and stands as the first state in the country to have a ban on single-use plastic. With its recognition as Devbhoomi, meaning the Land of the Gods, the state aims to foster environmental consciousness among its youth through awareness drives and education.

The proactive steps taken by the Himachal Pradesh government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, serve as an inspiring example for other regions in India and around the world. By implementing policies, promoting sustainable practices, and raising awareness, Himachal Pradesh is setting a strong precedent for environmental conservation and working towards a greener future.
