Satyendar Jain, former Delhi minister, has been granted interim bail by the Supreme Court due to his deteriorating health. The court rejected the Enforcement Directorate’s request for Jain to be examined by a panel of doctors at AIIMS. The Enforcement Directorate argued that medical records could be manipulated since Jain was the Health Minister during his tenure.
Jain’s lawyer informed the court that he had lost 35 kg and is suffering from various ailments, describing him as a “skeleton.” Jain had recently collapsed in Tihar Jail and was subsequently admitted to a Delhi hospital’s ICU. He was also evaluated at Safdarjung Hospital for a spine injury caused by a fall in the jail’s bathroom. Jain’s bail is subject to conditions imposed by the trial court, including refraining from making statements in the media or attempting to influence witnesses.
Jain was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate last year on charges of money laundering. He held key ministerial portfolios, including health, housing, and urban development, in the Cabinet of Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi. While still in prison, Jain resigned from his ministerial posts in January of this year.
