In Kolkata, metro services along the Kavi Subhas-Dakshineswar corridor were disrupted for an hour on Tuesday morning due to a tragic incident. A 45-year-old man named Sujit Kumar Sahoo ended his life by jumping in front of a Kavi Subhas-bound train at Kalighat Metro station. The incident occurred at around 10.10 am while the train was entering the station. Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel acted swiftly, cutting off the power supply, but unfortunately, the man could not be saved and succumbed to his injuries.
Following the incident, truncated metro services were operated between Maidan and Dakshineswar from 10.20 am, as well as between Mahanayak Uttam Kumar (Tollygunge) and New Garia (Kavi Subhas). These limited services were in place for about an hour, and normal operations along the entire corridor were fully restored at 11.20 am, according to a spokesperson from Metro Railway.
Police investigations suggest that Sujit Kumar Sahoo, a resident of Aurobindo Pally in Behala, had been experiencing financial stress and depression. He ran a grocery store in Behala and had recently become increasingly withdrawn, hardly interacting with anyone. The authorities are conducting further investigations into the incident, and a post-mortem examination has been performed.
The incident caused significant inconvenience to daily commuters, particularly during peak office hours. Many passengers were left stranded and had to rely on crowded buses for their transportation needs. Arpan Bhowmick, a resident of Naktala, mentioned the challenges he faced in finding a seat on the bus between Tollygunge and Maidan, resulting in an extra 30 minutes of travel time to reach his office on that day. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and support, urging society to address issues such as depression and financial stress that can have severe consequences for individuals.
