Israeli airstrike destroyed the 14-storey Watan Tower, a residential building that also included a number of press and commercial offices, in the Al-Rimal area in central Gaza City, October 8, 2023. Israeli colonial forces declared a "complete siege” on Gaza, denying the enclave’s millions of residents access to food, water and fuel and launched hundreds of airstrikes, killing hundreds and causing the displacement of tens of thousands of Palestinians. On the morning of October 7, the Palestinian resistance led by Hamas launched a surprise attack called the Al-Aqsa Flood operation. Dozens of resistance fighters raided Israeli settlements and thousands of rockets were launched from the Gaza Strip. At least 900 Israelis were killed and more than 100 are being held ass hostages by Hamas in Gaza.

In a troubling development, Israeli airstrikes targeted the occupied West Bank, specifically Tulkarem, claiming the lives of five individuals on Wednesday. Four of the casualties occurred in a refugee camp, as reported by emergency services and confirmed by the Israeli army. The Palestinian Red Crescent, on the front lines of providing aid, conveyed the grim news of four lives lost due to the “occupation’s bombardment.”

Faisal Salama, an official at the affected camp, described a dire situation, stating, “The camp is besieged by aircraft and heavy numbers of the Israeli army, and tanks.” This paints a distressing picture of the challenges faced by the residents caught in the crossfire.

Adding to the complexity of the situation, a separate incident near Balata refugee camp saw the Israeli army conduct an airstrike targeting Ahmed Abdullah Abu Shalal, identified as a Palestinian militant. The army justified the action by asserting that it averted a “terrorist attack” he was allegedly planning. According to the Israeli military, Abu Shalal had been responsible for several attacks over the past year, including one in annexed east Jerusalem.

These events underscore the ongoing tensions and conflict in the region, with communities bearing the brunt of the violence. The loss of lives in the refugee camps highlights the human toll of such incidents, prompting concerns about the well-being of those living in these vulnerable areas.

As international attention turns to the situation in Tulkarem and Balata, calls for a de-escalation of hostilities and a renewed commitment to peaceful dialogue become increasingly urgent. The complex geopolitical landscape and historical tensions in the region continue to shape events, making it crucial for the international community to engage in efforts aimed at finding a lasting and equitable resolution to the ongoing conflicts.
