Communal Violence Erupts in Nuh, Haryana: Two Dead, Dozens Injured, and Temples Held Hostage
July 31, 2023
Nuh, Haryana, witnessed a violent clash on Monday as communal tensions flared during a procession organized by the Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP). The clashes resulted in two fatalities and left around a dozen people, including 10 police personnel, injured. The incident led to the suspension of internet services in the district and the imposition of prohibitory orders to restore peace and prevent further escalation.
According to reports, the Brij Mandal Jalabhishek Yatra was flagged off from Gurgaon’s Civil Lines in the morning by BJP district president Gargi Kakkar and other leaders. The procession was en route to Ferozepur Jhirka, passing through Nuh around 1.30 pm. The yatra’s organizers claimed to have permission from the district administration, and approximately 1,000 police officers were deployed at three sites along its route.
However, the procession was halted by a group of young men near Khedla Mod in Nuh, where they started pelting stones at the participants and set fire to at least one vehicle. Despite the heavy police presence, violence continued to escalate, leading to casualties and injuries.
The situation took a more critical turn when Haryana’s Home Minister, Anil Vij, sought additional forces from the Centre, asserting that around “3,000-4,000 persons were being held hostage in a temple” until Monday evening. The temple in question was later identified as the Narhar temple.
The Chief Minister, M L Khattar, appealed to the people to maintain peace and harmony during this tense situation. He emphasized that all issues could be resolved through dialogue and urged everyone to refrain from spreading false information.
In response to the escalating violence, the government took swift action, suspending internet services in the district to prevent the spread of inflammatory material and false rumors. Section 144 was also imposed in the area to restrict the carrying of weapons and maintain public order.
Authorities have been closely monitoring the situation, with the Director General of Police, ADGP (CID), and other key officials coordinating efforts to restore peace in the area. Reinforcements were dispatched, and additional forces from neighboring districts were called in to rescue those held hostage in the temple.
The opposition, including INLD’s Abhay Chautala, criticized the ruling BJP-JJP coalition government for not taking adequate preventive action despite prior apprehensions of potential law and order disruption in Nuh.
Former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda issued an appeal to the public to remain calm and avoid spreading rumors, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace and communal harmony in the region.
As the situation remains tense, authorities are actively working towards resolving the crisis through dialogue and strategic operations. The safety and well-being of the residents are of utmost priority, and measures are being taken to restore normalcy in Nuh as soon as possible.
