In a recent development in Maharashtra’s Kolhapur, five college-going minors have been detained by the police for allegedly posting offensive social media account statuses and sharing an image of Tipu Sultan, an 18th-century ruler of Mysore. The authorities have initiated a probe to determine the motivations behind their actions and identify any potential influences or instigators involved.
The incident sparked tensions in the region, leading to a call for a Kolhapur bandh (a shutdown of the city) by the Bajrang Dal, a right-wing Hindu organisation. The bandh was organised in protest against the social media posts that eulogised both Aurangzeb and Tipu Sultan. Unfortunately, the situation escalated and turned violent, prompting the police to intervene and disperse the crowd using force.
Expressing concern over the events, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde called for calm and urged citizens not to take the law into their own hands. He emphasised that nobody should resort to violence and that the investigation should proceed to establish the truth behind the incident.
A senior police official has confirmed that the individuals detained are college students who are minors. The police are now focusing on understanding the factors that led these young individuals to engage in such actions. The probe aims to determine whether they were influenced or incited by external sources or whether there were other factors at play.
Moreover, an FIR has been filed against Sandeep Deshpande, a leader of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), and eight others for burning an effigy of Aurangzeb as a reaction to the Kolhapur violence. The Mumbai Police confirmed that the accused individuals have been booked under relevant sections of the Maharashtra Police Act.
Deepak Kesarkar, a minister, has directed the formation of an independent committee to prevent any further communal discord in the city. The committee’s objective is to ensure that such incidents are not repeated and to foster harmony among the diverse communities residing in Kolhapur.
The minister expressed disappointment that some individuals have created a situation that is detrimental to society as a whole. He stressed that it is unjust for ordinary citizens to bear the consequences of such incidents. Kesarkar also highlighted the importance of avoiding political exploitation of the situation, emphasising that the investigation would uncover the truth for all to see.
As the probe progresses, the authorities are committed to maintaining law and order in Kolhapur while ensuring that justice is served. The incident serves as a reminder of the need to promote responsible use of social media platforms and to address underlying issues that may lead to conflicts or tensions in society.
