Jegadeshwaran, a bright young student who completed his Class XII in 2022, had his sights set on a medical career. However, his dreams were shattered as he struggled to succeed in the NEET examination, which serves as the gateway to medical colleges across India. Despite his hard work and determination, Jegadeshwaran’s inability to clear the exam twice left him feeling dejected and defeated.

Father unable to Cope with the loss

Tragedy struck on a fateful Saturday afternoon when Jegadeshwaran, alone at home, took the extreme step of ending his own life. Distraught over their son’s untimely death, the family was further devastated when Selvasekar, a photographer, was unable to cope with the loss. He was found hanged in their family home in the Chromepet area of Chennai on Sunday, the day after his son’s cremation.

The heartbreaking incident has brought to the forefront the immense pressure that students, particularly those preparing for competitive exams, experience. The news has sparked conversations about the need for comprehensive mental health support systems for students, as they navigate the challenges of academic expectations and societal pressure.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister expressed his grief over the tragic turn of events. He remarked, “I was shocked to know that Jegadeeswaran from Chromepet, who was a NEET aspirant, committed suicide. When I was thinking of how to console his parents, the next day his father Selvasekar also died by suicide.”

Conclusion

The incident serves as a grim reminder of the importance of addressing mental health concerns and providing adequate emotional support to young individuals facing the pressures of competitive exams. It is a clarion call for society to collectively work towards fostering an environment where the pursuit of education and dreams is met with empathy, understanding, and necessary mental health resources.
