In a recent reshuffling of its leadership, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has made significant changes to its central office-bearers, dropping some key figures while welcoming new faces into important posts. The decisions, taken at a four-hour-long meeting chaired by party president J.P. Nadda, signal the party’s preparations for the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
Karnataka’s hardline leader, C.T. Ravi, and Assam MP, Dilip Saikia, have been removed from their national general secretary positions. Reports suggest that this move was to pave the way for their participation as contestants in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Radha Mohan Singh, a former Union minister and Bihar MP, has also been dropped as one of the vice-presidents, potentially to play a major role in Bihar during the parliamentary elections.
In a notable development, the BJP has brought in Anil Antony, the son of Congress stalwart A.K. Antony, who recently joined the party. He has been appointed as one of the new secretaries, indicating the party’s strategy to broaden its base and include leaders from diverse backgrounds.
Among the fresh faces in the new leadership lineup is Tariq Mansoor, the former Vice-Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University, who currently serves as a BJP Member of the Legislative Council in Uttar Pradesh. Mansoor’s appointment as one of the vice-presidents is seen as a step towards the party’s outreach to Pashmanda Muslims.
*Another notable promotion is that of Gorakhpur leader Radha Mohan Agarwal, who has been elevated as one of the national general secretaries. Agarwal’s appointment may be interpreted as an attempt by the party to reconcile with him, as he was earlier asked to vacate his constituency for Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Adityanath. This move also grants him the responsibility to oversee the party’s affairs in Kerala and Lakshadweep.
The BJP has also announced the appointment of 13 new vice presidents, nine new general secretaries, and nine secretaries. While some of these are reappointments, the addition of new faces reflects the party’s effort to strengthen its organizational structure.
The meeting, which discussed the party’s electoral strategies and outreach programs, was attended by several prominent leaders, including national general secretaries Arun Singh, Sunil Bansal, Vinod Tawde, Tarun Chugh, Kailash Vijayvargiya, Delhi Shaukeen, and Dushyant Gautam, among others.
The leaders particularly focused on electoral strategies in states like Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, and Mizoram, all of which are scheduled to have their assembly elections before the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. Earlier this month, the party had already reshuffled its state leadership in many states to ensure better representation of leaders from under-represented caste groups.
As the BJP gears up for the upcoming parliamentary elections, these changes in the party’s top leadership reflect its determination to consolidate its support base, accommodate regional leaders, and present a dynamic face ahead of the crucial 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
