US President Joe Biden is scheduled to meet with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Japan, according to the White House. The meeting, which takes place as part of Biden’s curtailed foreign trip, aims to strengthen alliances and partnerships and reaffirm America’s global leadership.
John Kirby, the Coordinator for Strategic Communications at the National Security Council, emphasized that revitalizing alliances and partnerships has been a top priority for President Biden since taking office. He highlighted the unity among G7 members, particularly regarding their support for Ukraine in the face of Russia’s invasion. The G7 has taken action to isolate Russia and weaken its ability to wage war, and this display of unity will extend to other economic and security issues.
Kirby also mentioned the common approach of G7 leaders towards the challenges posed by China, emphasizing shared values and the need for solidarity. The G7 intends to present an affirmative agenda on clean energy transition and address the climate crisis while creating job opportunities. Additionally, the leaders will focus on supporting developing countries by scaling up infrastructure initiatives such as the Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment (PGII) and promoting the evolution of institutions like the World Bank to effectively tackle global challenges, including poverty reduction and climate change.
The President will have a separate meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Kishida to strengthen security, economic, and multilateral cooperation and enhance the alliance between the US and Japan.
The upcoming meetings reflect the Biden administration’s commitment to engaging with key international partners and addressing pressing global issues. By fostering unity and collaboration among G7 members, the US aims to address challenges such as Russia’s aggression, China’s rise, climate change, and infrastructure development. The meetings also provide an opportunity to discuss mutual security concerns and explore avenues for further strengthening alliances.
Overall, the G7 summit and accompanying bilateral meetings signify a concerted effort to reestablish America’s leadership on the global stage and reaffirm the commitment to shared values and cooperative action in addressing global challenges.
