The CAA ( Citizenship Amendment Act) passed in 2019. It fast tracks the citizenship of people from the Hindu, Sikh, Parsi , Christian , Buddhist and Jain communities from Pakistan , Bangladesh and Afghanistan who entered in India before 31 December 2014 with no documents.

The home minister Amit Shah said” CAA ( Citizenship Amendment Act ) is a law of land and those who are dreaming that CAA will not be implemented are mistaken, for it will be implemented.” he added that the rules of the CAA act were under construction and there were some delays due to the pandemic.

The CAA was passed by parliament on 11 December 2019. it got the assent from the president of India on 12 December 2019 which is the same year. The ministry said that the act would be implemented or come into force on 10 January 2020. But the rules have not been notified which makes the legislation a little ineffective. There were a lot of protests against the implementation of this Act . As many as 83 persons were killed in protest and in the riots from December 2019 to March 2020 in the states- Assam, Karnataka, Meghalaya and Assam and also Delhi after the CAA was announced and passed.

Most of the parts of the northeastern states are given exemptions from this CAA. but some areas of assam, tripura, meghalaya , mizoram are included . the tstaes if arunachal pradesh , mizoram ,nagaland and manipur have gotten exemotions from thud sact .

Before the ministry had told the rajya sabha committee that more time is required till 31 december 2022 ,it sought the time till 2023 frim the lok sabha now.
