Delhi’s Cricket: Yash Dhull Ousted as Captain After Opening Match Defeat

In a surprising move, Yash Dhull has been removed as the captain of the Delhi cricket team, following their heavy defeat against Puducherry in the opening match of the Ranji Trophy. The decision, made just hours after the loss, reflects the team’s commitment to revitalizing its performance under the leadership of senior batter Himmat Singh.

Dhull, the U-19 World Cup-winning captain, was appointed skipper in December 2022 in an attempt to rejuvenate Delhi’s cricketing fortunes. However, the 21-year-old’s recent struggles with form, coupled with his team’s disappointing performance, led to the decision to relieve him of captaincy duties.

Since making his debut in February 2022, Dhull has shown promise, amassing 1185 runs at an average of 43.88. However, his recent scores of two and 23 in the loss to Puducherry underscored a dip in form. Notably, Dhull had also led the side in white-ball tournaments earlier in the season.

DDCA joint secretary Rajan Manchanda explained the decision, stating, “Yash is a talented player but is out of form. We wanted him to do well as a batter, that is why we have relieved him of captaincy duties. Himmat is our senior player and has done very well for us. He will captain the side.”

About Yash Dhull:

Himmat Singh, the newly appointed captain, had previously led Delhi to a significant victory over Mumbai in Dhull’s absence last season. The 27-year-old, with 22 first-class games under his belt since his debut in 2017, brings experience and a proven track record to the leadership role.

The team’s struggles extend beyond the playing field, with senior players Nitish Rana and Dhruv Shorey departing Delhi last year, moving to UP and Vidarbha, respectively. This trend of senior players leaving the squad adds to the challenges faced by the Delhi team management.

Delhi’s cricketing journey seems to be marked by a consistent struggle for stability and success, both on and off the field. The leadership shake-up and the departure of experienced players raise questions about the team’s ability to overcome these hurdles and regain its winning momentum.

As Delhi gears up to face Jammu and Kashmir in an away game from January 12 under the new leadership, the spotlight is firmly on Himmat Singh and the team’s ability to turn the tide and reclaim their position as a force to be reckoned with in Indian domestic cricket.
