Opposition Parties consider censure motion in Rajya Sabha

As the no-confidence motion debate in the Lok Sabha approaches, opposition parties in the Rajya Sabha are reportedly contemplating a “censure” motion expressing their “dissatisfaction” with the government’s handling of the situation. While there is no explicit provision for a censure motion in either House of Parliament, opposition MPs can use certain words to convey their intent.

In a meeting of the INDIA alliance parties on Wednesday to strategize their approach on the floor, a senior Congress member from the Rajya Sabha began reading out the draft of the proposed censure motion. However, the discussion was interrupted by a Rajya Sabha floor leader from a non-Congress party who firmly disagreed with the idea of such a motion.

The opposition parties are seeking an advanced schedule for the no-confidence debate in the Lok Sabha, which is currently slated to take place from August 8 to 10, the last three days of the session. They argue that the government might utilize the opportunity to pass crucial bills and want to ensure their active participation in the legislative agenda discussions.

Speaking on the matter, former Lok Sabha secretary general P Sreedharan clarified that there is no provision for a censure motion against any person in Parliament. Nevertheless, any member can give notice to move a motion, and the wording of such a motion is crucial in conveying the intent of the opposition.

The no-confidence motion in the Lok Sabha was requested by opposition parties who want to address their concerns and put forward their opinions on how the current situation should be handled. The motion is set to trigger a debate on the floor, providing a platform for opposition voices to be heard.

The issue of a possible censure motion in the Rajya Sabha adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing political developments. Opposition leaders are expected to discuss the matter further in the coming days before arriving at a final decision.

As the political atmosphere heats up, all eyes are on both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha to see how the opposition parties will navigate their way through this critical phase and assert their positions on the issues at hand.
