The Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted raids at the residence of Hero MotoCorp CEO, Pawan Munjal, on Tuesday, after taking cognizance of a Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) case. The DRI had recently apprehended one of Munjal’s close aides in possession of undeclared foreign currency, leading to an investigation into money laundering.
This is not the first time that the company has faced scrutiny. Earlier this year, the Income Tax department carried out raids at Hero MotoCorp premises in Delhi-NCR. In March of the previous year, the Income Tax department conducted search operations across 25 premises, including Hero MotoCorp offices and the chairman’s residence, to investigate alleged tax evasion against the firm.
Pawan Munjal played a crucial role in Hero MotoCorp’s global expansion after the company separated from Honda in 2011. Under his leadership, the company achieved the title of the world’s largest two-wheeler manufacturer in terms of unit volume sales in a calendar year in 2001, maintaining this status for two consecutive decades. In addition to his role at Hero MotoCorp, Munjal also holds executive positions in industry bodies such as the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the Society Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM).
The ED’s actions are part of a broader money laundering investigation, which adds further pressure on the company and its top executives. Hero MotoCorp shares experienced a decline of 4 per cent, trading at 3,066 apiece at the time of writing this article.
Hero MotoCorp, with its presence in around 40 countries across Asia, Africa, and South and Central America, has undoubtedly made a significant mark on the global two-wheeler market. However, the recent raids and investigations have put the company’s reputation and financial stability under the spotlight.
As the investigations unfold, stakeholders closely watch the developments, while the company’s leadership and board face the challenging task of navigating through these turbulent times. Investors, employees, and customers alike hope for transparency and swift resolution of any alleged financial irregularities, ensuring the company’s continued growth and success in the highly competitive two-wheeler industry.
