From January 1st to July 27th, 2023, Sri Lanka embraced a remarkable 748,377 tourists, achieving a significant milestone by exceeding the 2022 full-year numbers by 4 percent. The numbers have been consistently impressive, with July marking the sixth time the country surpassed 100,000 arrivals within the first seven months of the year. The month alone saw over 120,000 visitors, solidifying Sri Lanka’s reputation as an attractive destination.

Top Source Markets:

India, Sri Lanka’s neighboring giant, continued to lead as the top source market, contributing 17 percent of total arrivals with 20,770 tourists. The United Kingdom secured the second position, accounting for 12 percent of the total tourist arrivals, bringing in 15,126 visitors. However, a notable shift occurred in the third spot, with China emerging as one of the top three markets. After reopening its borders post-pandemic, China made a significant impact, accounting for 7 percent of the total tourist arrivals in July with an influx of 8,446 tourists.

Diverse Market Contributions:

While India, the UK, and China led the charge, other notable markets also played a crucial role in bolstering Sri Lanka’s tourism industry. Countries such as France, the Maldives, Netherlands, Canada, and Australia contributed to the diverse and cosmopolitan mix of visitors, enhancing Sri Lanka’s reputation as a must-visit destination for travelers worldwide.

Targets and Achievements:

With an ambitious target of attracting at least 137,594 tourists for July, Sri Lanka has achieved remarkable progress. Within the first 27 days of the month, the country realized a whopping 89 percent of its target, showcasing its allure and resilience in enticing tourists.
