Many arrested after video of rape in Manipur after violence

In a harrowing incident that has sent shockwaves across India, a distressing video showing the sexual assault of two women in Manipur state has surfaced on social media, prompting widespread anger and protests. The video, which was allegedly recorded on May 4, depicts two terrified women from the Kuki-Zo tribal community being paraded naked by a large mob of clothed men, many of whom were brandishing weapons. The victims were subjected to groping and sexual assault as they walked through the crowd, surrounded by their attackers.

The Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF) confirmed the authenticity of the video and stated that the incident occurred in B. Phainom village, Kangpokpi district. The incident took place amid ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur, a region grappling with tensions between the Meitei ethnic community and the Kuki tribe.

Following the video’s emergence, Manipur Police described the incident on Twitter as “a case of abduction, gang rape, and murder.” In response, authorities have arrested four individuals, and police raids are ongoing, with more than three dozen men being interrogated in connection to the horrific assault.

The situation has sparked outrage nationwide, prompting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to address the issue for the first time. Modi expressed grief and anger, describing the incident as “shameful for any civil society.” He assured that the law would take its course with full force to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The Upper House of Parliament faced disruption after opposition MPs demanded a discussion on the Manipur issue, leading to adjournment minutes into reconvening. The Congress party, in particular, has been a vocal critic of Modi’s handling of the situation, accusing the government of promoting mobocracy and destroying the state’s social fabric.

The incident appears to be connected to clashes that erupted on May 3, when students, primarily from the Kuki tribe, held a rally opposing the Meitei ethnic community’s petition for special tribal status. The petition aimed to grant the Meitei access to tribal privileges, such as the ability to buy land and enhanced opportunities for government jobs. The clashes resulted in over 100 deaths and the displacement of tens of thousands of people in Manipur.

Manipur’s Chief Minister, N. Biren Singh, assured swift action against the perpetrators, with the possibility of considering capital punishment for those involved. He emphasized that such heinous acts have no place in their society and that the police were conducting a thorough investigation.

The Indian government has issued an order to Twitter and other social media platforms, instructing them not to share the graphic video, citing an ongoing investigation. As the country grapples with the horror of the incident, the demand for justice and accountability has intensified, with citizens and activists calling for a united effort to combat sexual violence and bring the perpetrators to justice.

The incident in Manipur serves as a grim reminder of the urgent need for societal change and stricter enforcement of laws to protect vulnerable communities from such brutal acts of violence. The nation awaits the outcomes of the ongoing investigation, hoping that justice will be served and that incidents of this nature will never be repeated.
