Greta, Hunter Valley, New South Wales—In a devastating incident that occurred late Sunday night, a bus carrying wedding guests veered off the road and rolled over on Wine Country Drive in the town of Greta, located in the picturesque Hunter Valley region of New South Wales, Australia. The accident, which took place amidst foggy conditions, resulted in the loss of 10 lives and left 25 individuals injured, according to authorities.

The 58-year-old driver of the bus has been taken into custody by the police and is currently being held at a Cessnock police station. Police Assistant Commissioner Tracy Chapman confirmed that the driver will be charged, though she refrained from disclosing specific details about the allegations, including whether speed was a contributing factor. Commissioner Chapman, however, assured reporters that “there is sufficient information… for us to establish that there will be charges.”

The ill-fated bus had been transporting wedding guests who had attended a joyous celebration at the Wandin Estate Winery earlier in the evening. The passengers were en route to their accommodations in the town of Singleton when tragedy struck. One guest, speaking to Seven News, recalled the day as a beautiful affair, describing it as a “fairytale wedding.”

Emergency services responded swiftly to the scene, as multiple ambulances, helicopters, and road transport were utilized to provide aid to the victims. The 25 injured individuals were rushed to nearby hospitals for immediate medical attention, with some being airlifted due to the severity of their injuries. Fortunately, 18 passengers on the bus escaped unscathed.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, as well as the broader region, which is renowned for its wine production and attracts numerous tourists and visitors. The Hunter Valley wine region holds a significant place in Australia’s viticulture history, having been the country’s first established wine region.

As the news of the tragedy spreads, authorities are working diligently to ascertain the circumstances that led to this devastating accident. The investigation will likely provide crucial insights into the cause of the crash and potentially shed light on preventive measures that can be implemented to avoid similar incidents in the future.

The Greta community, as well as the wider Hunter Valley region, now mourns the loss of life and stands in solidarity with the families affected by this heart-wrenching incident. Our thoughts and condolences go out to all those impacted by this tragedy, as they navigate through this unimaginably difficult time.
