A tragic incident unfolded in Paikapada village, Balasore district, Odisha, where a man allegedly killed his wife for dancing in a wedding procession without his permission. The accused, identified as 43-year-old Ram Singh, reportedly became enraged upon seeing his wife, Sharmila Singh (35), participate in the dance. The incident took place on Saturday night during a wedding ceremony organized by Ram’s neighbor.
According to sources, despite Sharmila’s initial refusal, some women forcefully dragged her into the middle of the procession and made her dance. Ram witnessed this and grew increasingly angry, although he did not express his displeasure at the time. After the function concluded, Ram consumed alcohol with his friends and became heavily intoxicated.
Upon returning home from the wedding feast, an argument erupted between the couple at around 11 pm. Ram yelled at Sharmila for dancing without his permission, and when she protested, he flew into a fit of rage. In his anger, Ram assaulted her with a digging bar. Despite the couple’s two minor children managing to snatch away the bar, Ram continued the attack using the handle of an axe, leading to Sharmila bleeding to death.
Neighbors, alerted by the commotion, rushed to the scene and discovered Sharmila lying in a pool of blood. The police were immediately informed, and a team from the Oupada police station arrived the following morning for investigation. The woman’s body was sent for postmortem examination, and based on a complaint filed by Sharmila’s parents, the police registered a case under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and arrested Ram.
The tragic incident highlights the issue of domestic violence and the extreme consequences it can have. The investigation into the case is ongoing.
