The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has strongly criticized the treatment of Indian wrestlers by the Delhi Police during their protest, describing it as “very disturbing” in a statement. The IOC’s response came after the United World Wrestling (UWW) also condemned the detention of the wrestlers and threatened to suspend the national federation if it fails to hold elections within the designated timeframe.

The top wrestlers, including Sakshi Malik, Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia, and Sangeeta Phogat, have accused the Wrestling Federation of India’s outgoing president of sexual exploitation. The IOC demands an unbiased criminal investigation in accordance with local law to address these allegations. While acknowledging the initial steps taken towards an investigation, the IOC emphasizes the need for further actions and a speedy conclusion while ensuring the safety and well-being of the athletes.

Disturbing scenes of police dragging Olympic and World Championships medalists were witnessed during the wrestlers’ march towards the new Parliament building. The wrestlers are demanding the arrest of the accused for alleged sexual harassment, including that of a minor.

The IOC supports the UWW’s involvement as the competent sporting authority to address the issue and expects the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to take necessary actions to protect the athletes and ensure the WFI elections proceed as planned. The UWW has expressed disappointment over the lack of results in the investigations and will hold a meeting with the wrestlers to inquire about their condition and safety. Failure to hold the elections within the designated timeframe may lead to the suspension of the federation, potentially forcing athletes to compete under a neutral flag.
