New Delhi: The Indian government has expressed deep concerns over the potential impact of the ongoing protest by wrestlers against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the chief of the Wrestlers Federation of India (WFI), on India’s participation in the upcoming Olympics and Asian Games. As tensions continue to escalate, questions are arising about the functioning of the WFI and the training of athletes.
The Asian Games, scheduled to take place in Hangzhou, China, from September 23 to October 8 this year, and the Paris Olympics in 2024 are now looming uncertainties for Indian wrestlers. The athletes’ protest against Brij Bhushan Singh has added another layer of complexity to an already challenging situation.
Responding to the growing concerns, Union Minister of State for Sports, Nishit Pramanik, assured the nation that India’s medal tally would not be affected by the ongoing controversy. Pramanik stated that the athletes are focused on their training and remain determined to achieve success in the upcoming competitions.
India has shown commendable performance in the last four Olympic Games, securing a total of six medals. However, the ongoing dispute between the wrestlers and the wrestling federation has raised doubts about the future trajectory of the sport in the country.
The ongoing protest has become a topic of discussion among athletes participating in the Khelo India University Games in Lucknow. Sports administrators from across the nation are convening to discuss the dispute and seek a resolution that would safeguard the interests of the wrestlers while maintaining the integrity of the sport.
In an unprecedented move, the wrestlers have announced their refusal to train at the Sai Center in Uttar Pradesh and the training center in Gonda. This development has further fueled the controversy surrounding the matter.
Nishit Pramanik, when questioned about the issue, emphasized that sports and athletes are paramount, rising above talks and controversies. While he refrained from commenting on the allegations of sexual abuse, which are currently sub judice, he assured the public that India’s medal count would not decrease. Pramanik expressed optimism that more wrestlers would excel and bring home medals.
Among the prominent grapplers leading the protest are Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik, and Vinesh Phogat. These athletes have been staging a demonstration at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, demanding the immediate arrest of Brij Bhushan Singh. They have leveled serious allegations of sexual harassment against the WFI chief, including instances involving a minor.
As the wrestlers’ protest gains momentum and garners attention, the focus is shifting towards resolving the dispute and ensuring a fair and conducive environment for athletes to excel. The sports community, including athletes, administrators, and government officials, must work together to address the allegations and restore the trust and confidence necessary for the continued growth of wrestling in India.
