Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Australian counterpart, Anthony Albanese, have expressed their satisfaction with the rapid advancement of bilateral ties between India and Australia, likening it to the fast-paced action of a T-20 cricket match. During their extensive discussions, the leaders emphasized the expansion of the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two nations.
PM Modi extended an invitation to PM Albanese and Australian cricket enthusiasts to visit India for the upcoming Cricket World Cup later this year. He highlighted the significance of the frequent high-level interactions between the two leaders, noting that this was their sixth meeting within a year. Modi described this as a testament to the deepening relations, shared perspectives, and mature ties between India and Australia.
The Prime Minister also emphasized that India-Australia relations extend beyond the bilateral sphere and contribute to regional stability, global welfare, and the progress of the Global South. He referred to the recent Quad Summit in Hiroshima, where discussions on the Indo-Pacific took place, highlighting the potential benefits of India-Australia cooperation in the region.
Modi emphasized that India’s G-20 Presidency revolves around the concept of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,” which recognizes the world as one family. He characterized his meeting with Albanese as constructive and emphasized the productive nature of their discussions.
India and Australia have witnessed a significant upswing in their relationship in recent years. The Economic Cooperation Trade Agreement (ECTA) was finalized and came into force last year, while both countries are currently working on the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA). Additionally, the Mutual Logistics Support Agreement (MLSA) signed in June 2020 grants reciprocal access to military bases for logistics support, further enhancing defense cooperation.
PM Albanese echoed PM Modi’s sentiments, expressing the value his government places on strengthening ties between the two nations. He acknowledged the contributions of the Indian-Australian community in Australia and emphasized the desire for increased connections between the two countries.
PM Modi’s visit to Australia marks the final leg of his three-nation tour, which also included visits to Japan and Papua New Guinea.
