Kolkata, May 23, 2023 – In a significant development that could shape the course of political dynamics in India, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee met with Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann in Kolkata to discuss the contentious ordinance brought by the central government against the Delhi government. The meeting, which was held behind closed doors, has injected fresh energy into the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and garnered support from the Trinamool Congress (TMC).

Addressing a joint press conference after the meeting, Mamata Banerjee vowed to oppose the ordinance brought by the Centre, criticizing the government for its alleged disregard for the Constitution and the Supreme Court verdicts. She expressed concerns that the central government might change the very fabric of the nation, urging opposition parties to unite against such measures.

The focus of the meeting centered around the recently passed ordinance establishing the National Capital Civil Service Authority, which effectively reverses a Supreme Court ruling granting control of services in Delhi, excluding those related to police, public order, and land, to the elected government. The ordinance empowers the newly established authority to handle the transfer and disciplinary proceedings of Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and Delhi, Andaman and Nicobar Islands Civil Service (DANICS) cadre officers.

Arvind Kejriwal, the leader of the AAP, has been at the forefront of opposing the ordinance, claiming that it undermines the democratic rights of the people of Delhi. Prior to the meeting, Kejriwal embarked on a nationwide tour to garner support for his cause, seeking solidarity from opposition parties. In a tweet, he stated, “Today, I am starting my journey around the country for the rights of the people of Delhi. The Supreme Court had passed a judgment giving justice to the people of Delhi. The Centre snatched away those rights by bringing the ordinance.”

The AAP has been proactive in seeking the support of non-BJP parties, referring to this moment as a crucial “agni pariksha” or trial by fire for the opposition. They argue that the preservation of democracy and the Constitution necessitates a united front against what they perceive as an assault on the autonomy of state governments.

The meeting between Mamata Banerjee, Arvind Kejriwal, and Bhagwant Mann has bolstered the hopes of AAP and other opposition parties in their quest to thwart the central government’s ordinance. The coming together of influential regional leaders signifies a potential realignment in national politics and a united front against what is perceived as encroachment on the rights of states.

As the off-camera meeting concluded, its outcome is yet to be fully disclosed. However, the prolonged duration of the discussions indicates the seriousness and depth of the deliberations. It remains to be seen how opposition parties rally together to counter the central government’s move, with the Rajya Sabha being a crucial battleground for the fate of the ordinance.

The nation now eagerly awaits further developments and the subsequent actions of opposition parties as they strive to protect the principles of democracy and uphold the sovereignty of state governments against perceived overreach by the central administration.
