In a move that has taken many by surprise, the Haryana government has allowed low-content alcohol drinks like beer, wine, and ready-to-drink beverages inside large corporate offices. This decision means that employees in the state can now enjoy a glass of beer or wine while at work.

The new liquor policy, only offices with a minimum covered area of one lakh-square feet in a single premises will be provided with a licence (L-10F) for consumption of low-content alcohol beverages.

It is important for corporate offices to have a minimum area of canteen or eatery of not less than 2,000 square feet. “The procedure for grant of licence shall be as applicable to the bar licences. The L-10F licence shall be granted on payment of an annual fixed fee of ₹10 lakh on terms and conditions specified by the excise and taxation commissioner,” HT quoted the policy statement.

-It is important for these offices to get their licence by paying a security amount of ₹3 lakh in addition to the licence fee.

The L-10F licence will be granted by the collector, after getting clearance from the excise and taxation commissioner. The license will be renewed by the deputy excise and taxation commissioner of the district on behalf of the collector.

-There has been an increase in the application fee for the grant of a temporary licence (L-12AC) to event organisers for serving liquor during entertainment shows, exhibitions, comedy shows, magic shows, mega-shows, celebrity events, etc

The move has been welcomed by many, who see it as a way to promote a more relaxed and social work environment. Many employees have expressed excitement about the prospect of enjoying a drink with colleagues after work, without having to leave the office.

However, the decision has also been met with criticism from some quarters. Some have raised concerns about the potential for alcohol abuse and the impact it could have on productivity and workplace safety.

To address these concerns, the notification states that the consumption of alcohol at the workplace will be strictly regulated. Companies will be required to obtain a license from the Excise and Taxation Department, and alcohol will only be allowed in designated areas within the office premises. Additionally, employees will only be allowed to consume alcohol during non-working hours and only in moderation.

The decision to allow alcohol at the workplace is not without precedent. Many companies in western countries allow employees to consume alcohol on their premises. However, this is still a relatively new concept in India, and it remains to be seen how companies in the state will implement the new regulations.

Overall, the decision by the Haryana government to allow low-content alcohol drinks at the workplace has stirred up a debate on the pros and cons of such a move. While some see it as a positive step towards creating a more relaxed work environment, others remain concerned about the potential for alcohol abuse and the impact it could have on productivity and safety in the workplace.
